A wonderful house in Hamtramck with fresh snow. The new snow and sunshine made me want to paint this one. This has been the fourth or fifth snowiest winter ever in Michigan. We are ready for spring!

Another Michigan Central painting, This building has a hold on me. It is so awesome and haunting and beautiful all at the same time. There is a lot of talk about tearing it down. I hope they can find a way to make use of it. I am going to try to get inside again to take photos just in case.

Study in Blue & Grey, oil on linen panel, 5"x5"
Click on image for larger view.
This is a continuation of yesterday's thought on being able to show beauty where few would be able to see it.
The physical and mental act of painting is a great pleasure. I am very fortunate to be able to live an Artist's life, and do not take it for granted, but savor it everyday.

Midtown Landscape, oil on linen panel, 7"x5"

This is the back of one of many small mom and pop restaurants scattered all over Detroit. A sign said breakfast served anytime. I feel this building possesses a quiet dignity. There is often great beauty in the simply everyday things, you just have to let it come to you. Sometimes less is more.

This is a painting of the United Artist Marquee, the building is still standing but the marquee is gone.
There are so many wonderful buildings that I have painted over the last twenty-five plus years that are no longer standing. The paintings stand as a visual record of their existence. Sadly in Detroit so many are just destroyed and not renovated or restored as in other cities.

This building continues to inspire me.
In American Ruins (The Monacelli Press, 1999), Camilo José Vergara wrote, "I have photographed the former Michigan Central Railroad Station at least twice a year for eight years...The station, a huge, austere, neoclassical building erected in 1913 by Warren & Wetmore on the model of the Baths of Caracalla, is now derelict, isolated: a menacing presence."

I was intrigued by the contrast and silhouetting of the water tank against the stark color of the sky. This was one of those very crisp days we get when the cool clean Canadian air moves into Detroit giving everything a great clarity.

Click on image for larger view.
This is a detail of one of the front window columns in the Michigan Central R.R. Depot, I really liked the soft winter light in this one. It was designed by the same architect who designed Grand Central Station in New York City. It is still a monumental and beautiful building, even in it's battered condition.
